Asphalt reinforcement installation
Asphalt reinforcement also known as Glass Grids and Geo Synthetic Grids is a road and pavement reinforcement solution. Considered one of the most effective methods of surface durability it is an asphalt interlayer, when installed the overlay performance is drastically improved, significantly reducing the maintenance cost per kilometre, per year. Composite Reinforcement can be placed directly onto a milled and swept surface using a 100kn composite grid, placed with 160/220 pen grade bitumen, which also provides a waterproofing effect as mentioned in BS EN 15381. This method is effective in enhancing the durability and longevity of pavement and road structures.

Improve road durability with composite reinforcement
At Duropave, we are dedicated to the preservation and improvement of road and paved surfaces, all while helping our valued customers cut down on long-term maintenance costs. Our Managing Director Ray Wicks’s relationship with Tensar has led to the development of asphalt reinforcement solutions that not only extend the service life of roads but also provide substantial cost savings throughout their entire life cycle. In fact, Tensar's innovative geo grid applications can offer cost reduction by reduced thickness of asphalt or whole life cost savings by extending pavement life.
The primary focus of Duropave’s geo grid applications is to tackle structural road and pavement challenges, including fatigue cracking and reflective cracking and providing the three main functions lined out in BS EN 15381, stress relief, reinforcement and waterproofing.
Enhancing road longevity with geo grids to minimise maintenance expenses
These innovative solutions also deliver resistance to rutting and can effectively mitigate cracking stemming from differential settlement, making them invaluable for road expansion and widening endeavours.
When it comes to enhancing road longevity and minimising maintenance expenses, Duropave and Tensar's asphalt reinforcement products have you covered. We look forward to working with you to ensure the resilience and sustainability of your paved surfaces, providing durable solutions that stand the test of time.

The role of glass grids and composite reinforcement in road engineering
A widely adopted approach in asphalt reinforcement involves the use of geo synthetic materials like geo grids and geotextiles. Geo grids, made from robust polymer compounds, serve as a structural framework that improves load distribution and limits crack propagation. When combined with geotextiles, these systems offer additional protection against water infiltration and subgrade movement. Together, glass grids and geotextiles can be integrated into a composite reinforcement system, delivering comprehensive support and long-term performance for asphalt pavements through the synergy of mechanical strength and environmental resistance offered by composite reinforcement designs.

Enhancing pavement performance with geo synthetic materials
Composite reinforcement plays a vital role in enhancing the performance and durability of road surfaces, particularly in areas subjected to heavy traffic and harsh environmental conditions. By integrating advanced solutions such as geo synthetic materials and composite reinforcement, engineers can significantly strengthen asphalt layers, reduce the likelihood of cracking and rutting, and extend pavement lifespan. These modern glass grid reinforcement techniques not only minimise long-term maintenance but also improve the resilience of transportation infrastructure as a whole.

What is a geotextile?
Geotextile is a geo synthetic fabric which is laid on a bitumen tack coat and overlaid with asphalt.
What is a composite?
Composite is a fibreglass grid attached to a geotextile backing fabric.
Will geotextile stop cracking?
if installed correctly it will substantially delay the onset of reflective cracking and will prolong the life of the pavement.
Is the bitumen tack coat important?
Yes it is a vital component for ensuring the geotextile adheres to the pavement, provides a waterproofing and creates a uniform bond to control against reflective cracking.
Is a second bond coat needed?
No. The heat of the mix overlaying the geotextile will soften the bitumen sufficiently to draw it through the fabric to form a bond with the overlay.
